Mental Performance Consultant (MPC or LMPC)

A mental performance consultant focuses on helping individuals optimize performance, confidence, motivation, focus, and resilience in sport, business, academics, or other high-performance settings. Their work is centered on performance enhancement and developing mental skills such as goal setting, visualization, emotional regulation, and stress management.

What is Sport Psychology and a Mental Performance Consultant?

Sport and exercise psychology is the study of how psychological factors influence performance, physical activity, and overall well-being. It focuses on helping individuals improve performance, motivation, confidence, focus, and mental resilience in sport, exercise, and everyday life. The field also examines how participation in physical activity can positively impact mental health, personal growth, and quality of life.

Mental Health Counselor (MHC or LMHC)

A mental health counselor is a licensed clinical professional trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders and emotional difficulties such as anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, and relationship issues. Their work focuses on psychological healing, emotional well-being, and clinical intervention through counseling and psychotherapy.

MPC vs. MHC: Understanding the Difference

While both professions may address stress, emotions, and personal growth, the key difference is that a mental performance consultant works primarily on improving performance and functioning, whereas a mental health counselor provides clinical treatment for mental health concerns. Although there can be overlap in areas such as stress management and emotional support, mental health counselors are specifically trained and licensed to provide therapy and address psychopathology.

How I Help

Sessions are guided by your needs first. At the start, we collect key information so we can understand your goals and current mental habits. From there, we work together to build mental skills that support your goals and reduce unhelpful patterns. Finally, we apply these skills directly to your sport and life so they actually show up in your performance and help you get more consistent, high‑quality results.

Performance & The Mind

The NCAA Years

The road to college athletics and beyond demands hard work, dedication, and sacrifice—on and off the playing surface. It doesn’t just start in college; it starts early in your journey as a prospective athlete. Becoming a student‑athlete brings countless mental barriers that separate players from elite performers, but it also opens the door to even more powerful opportunities. Competing at this level gave me firsthand experience performing in high‑stakes situations and pushing my limits—on the ice, on the field, and in everyday life. These experiences allow Coach Opie to use what he has learned to help clients build the mental skills they need to be at their best.

The Transition to Performance Psychology

After years of junior hockey, Coach Tanner Opie was recruited by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to play hockey and lacrosse at the NCAA Division III level. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a pre‑certification in counseling. His passion for sport and the mental side of performance led him to pursue performance psychology after graduation. He went on to earn a Master of Education in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Springfield College where he participated in internship opportunities in the field. Coach Opie is a former New England native and the sole owner and consultant of TOP Mental Performance LLC, based in Kennesaw, Georgia. His experiences and education don’t just make him enjoy the work—they give him a deep passion and purpose for helping others improve their performance.
